Ingredients

  • 1 can fool (fava beans) - (you may wish to use freshly soaked broad beans, but for ease I have used canned)
  • 1 can chick peas
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 juice of lemon
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tbsp olive oil + extra for garnish
  • 1 handful fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

I know the name may sound rude, honestly I am not calling food a 'fool', that is the actual name :) It is traditionally an Egyptian breakfast, but is now made as a traditional breakfast in many arab countries. The way it is made will vary, but below I have shown you how we make it in our family :)
  1. Place the broad beans and chick peas in a pot, with their juice, and leave to heat gently for around 10 mins (or until warmed up)
  2. Meanwhile, in a serving bowl, crush the garlic with the salt (preferably using a pestle) 
  3. Place the broad beans and chick peas into this bowl (without their juice, but if you add a little its not a problem), and mash them with the garlic (does not need to be a perfect mash, some can remain whole)
  4. Place the juice of the lemon with this mixture, alongside half the chopped tomato and olive oil, and mix together. Check the taste, and adjust as needed (may need more salt, more lemon - add as appropriate)
  5. Add the other half of the tomato as a garnish, alongside the parsley, then add extra olive oil over this to finish off

Serve with warmed pita bread, and side of tomatoes, onions, olives and every goodie you can think of... Enjoy :)
